PSI: Saving Lives through Improving Health
Every year, more than 3.5 million children do not live to celebrate their fifth birthday because of diarrhoea and pneumonia.
Combating preventable diseases
Hand washing with soap is amongst the most effective and inexpensive ways to prevent those two diseases. Additionally, over one billion people do not have access to safe drinking water and 2.6 billion lack access to basic sanitation.
Handwashing, clean drinking water & sanitation
The Unilever Foundation’s partnership with PSI (Population Services International) is making a tangible contribution to improving the health of children and families on a global scale through delivering behavioural change interventions focused on hand washing, clean drinking water and sanitation.
In 2011, in support of Global Handwashing Day, PSI worked with Lifebuoy, one of Unilever’s leading hygiene brands, to launch a hand washing advocacy and social media campaign, featuring PSI Global Ambassador, actress and singer Mandy Moore.
Unilever and PSI will launch new hand washing programmes in Africa and a clean drinking water programme in Asia.
Unilever is also working with PSI on rehabilitation programmes in the aftermath of the Pakistan and the Horn of Africa disasters in 2011.
